t's a known fact that search engines have a soft spot for blogs. The question we should ask ourselves is why do they have such a hankering for blogs? It's pretty simple, search engines love to search and find new quality content. It's their aim to index high quality information as quickly as possible.

If you've not been blogging then you're missing out on an astounding opportunity to bring instant traffic to your website. A number one task for blogging is to update on a regular basis. I won’t get into the pros and cons of either methods here. There has been much debate and preferences cited on this subject. My intent is to let you know some of the choices available to you.

Many bloggers find it useful to have two blogs. They create what I like to call a sub-blog, where the blogger.com blog would be the blog they update from time to time that discusses topics dealing with their main blog.

When using the two blog method like this, you should have links pointing from your blogger.com blog to your main blog site. Reason being, blogger.com is spidered often, as mentioned before, and by default your blog with blogger.com, which is your sub-blog will also be spidered. Since your sub-blog will have links to your main blog it can also aid in having your main blog site spidered more quickly. (This most likely applies to Wordpress blogs as well).

Hosting Your Own Blog

Hosting your own blog gives you more flexibility to add various applications and plug-in features. Users who choose to host their own blog like having the ability to customize it, making their blog more unique and distinctive. In addition, they are the actual owner of the blog, unlike users of free blogs.

If you already have WordPress installed, you can add this line of code to your "Permalinks" section:

Now that you've got your blog setup, default Blogger and WordPress skins may not be too pleasing to you. Blogger.com offers a variety of blogging themes as templates right on the site. The instructions are very easy to follow. If using Wordpress and you really want your blog to stand out, you can change that by installing a new theme. Each time you make a post on your blog, ping your website to send out notification to all the blogging directories that you have made a new post. There are many ping services available and more becoming available all the time. I generally use Pingomatic for my blogspot site. It’s simple and straightforward. Since we are on the topic of pinging, this is yet another reason given by Wordpress users of why they prefer this blogging platform. WordPress has a built in Ping option that will notify all the major blogging and RSS feed directories that you've made a new post on your blog. This is automatically activated in the Writing" section of Word Press. If you scroll to the bottom of the "Writing" section you will see a section called Update Services

I want to discuss briefly acceptable etiquette when you move forward to get links to your blog. When you are at Bloglines.com you will be searching for blogs that fall into similar categories as yours. Next, you want to start replying to some of the blog posts made, giving your thoughts and ideas about the post or topic. Do this a few times with various blogs.

After you’ve commented a few times on a regular basis, then it’s considered acceptable etiquette to include your blog site link after your signature. Take heed here, do NOT place your blog site on your first post, unless the blog owner says it is alright (some do not mind).

However, as a general rule, you want to first develop a relationship with the blog and its publisher. You accomplish this by posting comments and leaving positive feedback on several occasions. After demonstrating you visit the blog because of its interesting and informative content, then it's alright to include a link when you post your next comment. I suggest commenting at least 4 to 5 times before attempting to place a link.

Use Blogging Directories To Help Promote Your Blog A great starting point to help promote your blog and generate traffic is by having it show up in the blogging directories. I have my Top 20 list of some of the most popular directories to submit new blogs. For the sake of brevity, I won't list them here. Just do a Google search for blogging directories. You'll find more than you have time to submit to.

If you do not have a Yahoo account, I strongly encourage you to register one right now at http://my.yahoo.com. After you register, add your feed to Yahoo's RSS Directory. You can do this in your My Yahoo user area. This method is considered one of the fastest ways to get your blog indexed by Yahoo.

In conclusion and to make myself perfectly clear, I do not guarantee that following any of these steps will make your new blog an overnight success. Nor do I claim you will receive an avalanche of traffic after the first few weeks of starting your blog. However, I will say these steps will get you moving in the right direction after your blog is created.

To get a domain name, you have to “register” it through a licensed domain name registrar. There are many registrars available, including GoDaddy.com, DomainAbbey.com, and NameCheap.com. Of all the registrars, my personal favorite and thus, my recommendation to you is NameCheap.com.

Generally, acquiring the domain name is one of the easiest and cheapest pieces of the Internet Marketing puzzle to put in place. For less than $10/ year, you can have your domain reserved and ready for your website. The process is relatively simple and can be accomplished in less than 10 minutes.

Step 3: The third step of the process is acquiring a host for your domain. Hosting companies serve a vital role in making your website available on the internet. First, they store your website files on a public computer that is connected to the internet, making it available to anyone in the world. Second, they control all the technical aspects of website requests to ensure that your website is delivered to all of the other computers that request it. In order to make this happen, you have to get your elbows a little greasy in the technical details of hosting your site. The most important piece of information that your hosting company will provide you is their DNS Server addresses. You should take these DNS numbers to your Domain Registrar (NameCheap) and replace the default DNS servers associated with your domain. Once you have accomplished this, you shouldn’t need to change anything with your registrar ever again (unless you decide to change hosting companies). Generally, this change can take as long as a day to fully process, so be patient.

There are tons of different hosts out there, GoDaddy.com, Dotster.com, Hostgator.com, JustHost.com & BlueHost.com to name a few. Personally, I am using JustHost.com and have never had a complaint. To top it off, they offer a free domain name with every new hosting account and have some of the lowest prices in the industry.

Step 4: With your DNS servers set up, you can go about getting your site set up. One of the cool things about JustHost (and one of the reasons why I recommend them) is that they offer CPanel to all of the websites they host. This is great because it is a very user-friendly application that will help you manage all of the technical aspects of your website, such as email addresses, databases, subdomains, etc… CPanel also has a feature called Fantastico that allows quick and easy setup of WordPress. Installing WordPress is the next step to getting your membership site up and running.

Step 5: Install a WordPress Blog on your Website using the Fantastico feature of your web domain. If your web host doesn’t offer Fantastico, follow the “Famous 5 Minute Installation” Guide found at WordPress’ site, www.wordpress.org. You can customize WordPress with your own graphics or with a free template from wordpress.org. If your Web Host doesn’t have cPanel or Fantastico, you should seriously consider switching to one that does (see Step 3 again).

Step 6: Go to WPWishList.com and purchase the WishList Member plug-in for Wordpress. This is the single software that will turn your simple blog into a powerful membership site. It requires a little customization, but the great part is you can get it running just how you want it. Well worth the small $97 price tag.

Step 7: Get The Hyper Blogger from http://www.thehyperblogger.com/.

Step 8: Get a payment processor and an affiliate management platform. My recommendation is Clickbank for both. With a one-time $49 set-up fee and minimal per-transaction fees, they really have one of the smoothest processes out there.

I register all my domain names with http://www.namecheap.com for under $9 a domain name, which to me is pretty darn cheap. You want a fairly short domain name that describes the content of your book fairly well.


B) Webhosting

Let me say first, you get what you pay for. This has never been more true then with webhosting. YOU NEED a good reliable webhosting company with 24/7 technical support. If your site goes down and you can't contact anyone to help you get it back up, you will lose sales and a lot of them.

I recommend you use http://www.thirdspherehosting.com for the simple fact they offer all you need, plus a lot more for a reasonable price.

C) Autoresponder

You will need this so you can contact your prospects that don't purchase straight away. This is where you will give away your free course or someway to entice them to give you their email address so you can contact them periodically.

D) Credit card processor

Just use http://www.clickbank.com. This step is too easy. They will let you accept all major credit cards and start an affiliate program for a one time setup fee of under $50. They do take a percentage of every sale, but this is so much cheaper then getting your own merchant account.

Just about everyone selling Ebooks online is using Clickbank.

E) Ebook Software

You will more then likely want to create your book in PDF format so everyone can read it. Some Ebooks come in EXE format, but mac users can't read that format, so I find it best to use PDF. You can create your book with http://www.createpdf.com for a fairly cheap price.

If you are anything like me, your artistic abilities peaked at age 7. 3) Outline your book chapters into articles

Writing a whole book in one sitting is hard, and trying to write a book without outlining the chapters is nearly impossible. My first book I ever wrote took me over 6 months but now most of my books take me less then a week to finish and that is with a sales letter and website up.

All you have to do is think up 12 to 15 article topics in sequence and write about them. Each page should be around 700 to 1000 words, full of useful information, not information people could get for free.

4) Write your content

Like I said just before, you need original content. There are too many books out there now where people are just regurgitating information others can get for free and this lowers the value of your book, which means less people will pass it around and even less will read it.

If you are really stuck with your writing, I suggest that you do the following.

The best way to get a good amount of original information without writing it yourself is to interview experts in the field. For instance, if you were writing a book about improving your golf handicap, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find some local experts who you could grill in person, over the phone or even via the Internet and you can then put all that information in the book. It's also a good selling point.

Also remember when your writing what the point of this book is. The point of the book is to earn you an on going commission with affiliate programs, so don't feel like you can't throw some affiliate links in, because you can, but make sure it's tactful and in place.

Another good idea would be to put a "Subscribe to my newsletter" section in your book as well, so not only will you make commissions on sales, but also generate leads without doing any extra work.

This is where you will be selling your book from and is critically crucial to your success.

Remember to emphasize an urgency.
